Rokers gaan staat aanklagen
Hoewel de titel van dit nieuwtje positief klinkt is het heel wat treuriger: min of meer analoog aan het Nederlandse Rokersfonds wil deze club organisaties via de rechter verantwoordelijk stellen voor de door hun – en volgens hun – door roken opgedane ziektes.
In dit Ierse geval beschuldigen deze rokers de Ierse overheid ervan hun gezondheid onvoldoende te hebben beschermd. Ze eisen dat de overheid meer doet. Koren op de molen van de Ierse gezondheidsminister en de anti-rokenorganisaties. Dit zal hun pogingen om rigoureuze anti-rookwetten in te voeren alleen maar ondersteunen.
The state intends to defend the actions, but if the claims are successful they will establish a precedent that could cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of euro.
It is understood that legal papers, including a statement of claim, have already been lodged, which join the state to anumber of cases taken against tobacco companies.
The Minister for Health, Micheal Martin, is under fire from publicans’ organisations and from some Fianna Fail backbenchers over his plans to ban smoking in all bars and restaurants from January 1.
