Rechtszaken tegen tabaksindustrie gestopt

Zo’n tien jaar geleden namen zo’n 2000 rokers en ex-rokers in Ierland zich voor, in navolging van soortgelijke rechtszaken in de VS, om de tabaksindustrie (Big Tobacco: BT) aan te klagen vanwege de gezondheidsschade die men zei te hebben geleden van het gebruik van tabaksproducten. Ook in Nederland zijn deze pogingen aan de gang.


Maar al deze 2000 Ieren hebben hun zaak inmiddels teruggetrokken omdat men bang is dat de tabaksindustrie op zijn beurt de (ex-)rokers weer zal aanklagen vanwege de proceskosten in een verloren zaak.


2000 andere Ieren maken zich nu op om de farmaceutische industrie (Big Pharma: BP) aan te klagen vanwege de gevaarlijke effecten van het geneesmiddel Vioxx.


Big Pharma lijkt de opvolger van Big Tobacco te worden en een dergelijk lot verdienen ze als ze hun manipulatieve opstelling niet veranderen…..


THE compensation battle against tobacco companies, which originally saw more than 2,000 people here willing to take cases, has been almost entirely abandoned, it emerged yesterday.


It is now nearly a decade since expectations were raised that Irish people whose health was damaged by cigarettes could follow the compensation route of similar claimants in the US where there have been large compensation payouts by tobacco companies.


However, it was confirmed yesterday that over fifty test cases which were withdrawn last year will not now be revived and the outlook is bleak for similar challenges in future.


The main stumbling block is the fear of claimants that they will be liable for huge legal costs incurred by the tobacco companies in the legal actions, losing their homes and other assets.
