Ierse minister zoekt bevestiging

Tijdens een bezoek aan New York zal de Ierse minister Martin, die een fervent voorstander is van rookverboden in de Ierse pubs, zich in die staat op de hoogte stellen van de effecten van de rookverboden daar. Dat klinkt sympathiek, maar is het niet: hij laat zich rondleiden door degenen die sterk vóór die rookverboden zijn. Medestanders dus.


Wat hij voor indruk zal krijgen is daarom aardig voorspelbaar. De Ierse horeca protesteert dan ook krachtig. De minister moet zich ook maar eens bij de gedupeerden durven laten zien, zeggen zij.



The Irish Hospitality Industry Alliance has criticised Irish health minister Micheál Martin for not meeting with bar and restaurant owners while in New York.


The association, which represents vintners and stands against the smoking ban set to hit bars on January 1, claims the hospitality trade in New York has suffered a 40% drop in business since the introduction of the ban there.


INIA chairman Finbar Murphy has called into question Minister Martin`s decision not to hear the views of the New Yorkers most affected financially by the ban.


Meanwhile, Tánaiste Mary Harney has lent her support to Micheál Martin, citing as an example her own unpopularity on foot of the coal ban in the Republic but saying that the government intends to persevere now as then.
