Forest carried out a random telephone poll of 10,000 adults from 10 different regions of the UK between April 20 and May 2 this year.
BREAKDOWN OF FOREST POLL 46% were never smokers 24% smoked every day 8% were ‘occasional’ smokers 23% were ex-smokers |
Overall, 74% said they did not support a ban on smoking in pubs and bars.
Of these, 98% said it was better to have a choice of smoking or non-smoking facilities than a complete ban.
Some 68% thought there should be separate smoking and non-smoking areas, with the majority favouring mainly non-smoking with separate smoking areas.
Many thought pub environments had improved and were noticeably less smoky than in previous years.
But the majority thought more improvements were still required.
Simon Clark, director of Forest, said: “Smoking isn’t a crime and it is important that politicians recognise that smokers need somewhere where they can smoke in comfort without being ostracised from their non-smoking friends.”
He urged people to make their views known to government.
Forest is launching a campaign designed to highlight the impact a complete ban might have.
