The Modern Inquisition of `Concerned` Science

IT is no coincidence that at the very time post-modernist attacks on the objectivity of science have invaded—and are indeed dominating—the humanities faculties in our most prestigious universities, political activists are increasingly misusing science as a tool of advocacy with little or no regard for objectivity or truth. The perverted use of science by the academic and political left in its service to the power elite is precisely that danger the post-modern critique wishes to address, but to which, by its own misunderstanding of science, it contributes.

Zo begint een artikel uit het Australische maandblad IPA Review, waarin wordt aangetoond hoe, in de huidige, postmoderne tijd, de wetenschap steeds meer wordt misbruikt om het (politieke) gelijk te halen.

Er wordt het geval beschreven van de longpecialist Dr. Julian Lee, die zich teweer stelde tegen de ook al in het midden van de 90`er jaren gangbare opvatting in het medische establishment, dat meeroken gevaarlijk zou zijn voor de omgeving. Dr. Lee, een niet-roker, zette vraagtekens bij die opvatting tijdens twee rechtszaken waarin meeroken een rol speelde. Wat er met Dr. Lee vervolgens gebeurde wordt in het artikel vergeleken met de Spaanse inquisitie: hij werd steeds meer tegengewerkt bij de uitoefening van zijn beroep van longchirurg, werd uit de medische gemeenschap gezet en werd in de medische bladen van van alles beschuldigd.

Ondanks dat zijn opponenten in een geruchtmakende rechtszaak werden veroordeeld, borduurt Australië in haar rookbeleid nog steeds door op het gedachtengoed van de veroordeelde medici..
