Rookverbod New York catastrofaal
Uit een onderzoek van de, normaal anti-roken georiënteerde, New York Post onder 50 bars en restaurants blijkt het catastrofale effect van de aanval van de anti-tabaksindustrie op de horeca. Sinds de invoering van het rookverbod:
- melden 34 van de ondervraagden (68%) een terugval in de inkomsten
- noteren 29 etablissementen een terugval van 10 tot 50 procent in de omzet (58%)
- moesten 6 bedrijven (12%) werknemers ontslaan
”The administration has stuck a knife in the back of the only industry that is holding this city up,” Bill O’Donnell of the Corner Bistro told The Post in Monday editions. ”This was a vibrant industry that generated a lot of money for the city, and they went and killed it.”
Since the ban began, 10 establishments have been ticketed, with fines ranging from $200 to $400 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for second and third offenses.
Bar and restaurant owners said the ban shows ”remarkably bad timing” because it comes on top of increasing property and sales taxes, increased Department of Health and licensing fees, and larger utility bills.
Het lag voor de hand: in Californië kunnen rokers het hele jaar op terrasjes terecht. Dat is anders in het veel koudere New York. En het rookverbod is nog na de winter ingegaan. De ellende zal daarom voor de New Yorkse horeca alleen nog maar toenemen….
