‘Roken is een handicap’

Dat is het verweer van een Nieuw-Zeelandse vakbond in een rechtszaak tegen een anti-rokenorganisatie. De organisatie had geweigerd rokers aan te nemen die als taak zouden krijgen Maori’s van het roken af te helpen.



Wellington, New Zealand – Employers cannot refuse to employ smokers because smoking is a disability and they cannot help it, New Zealand’s largest labour union argued on Monday.

Andrew Little, who heads the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, challenged the Human Rights Commission which ruled that employers were entitled to ban smokers because smoking is not a human right.

The row started because a South Island health board refused to employ smokers when recruiting counsellors for a programme designed to help indigenous Maoris quit smoking. – Sapa-DPA


Maar stel dat roken inderdaad een handicap is? Dan mogen we dus als roker aanspraak maken op gehandicaptenvoorzieningen? Aanpassingen aan de standaard werkplek?

After asking if one wants to quit it must be followed up with "Why?" Ask why and the majority of the answers will be "because I'm supposed to" (victims of guilt and propaganda), not "because I want to."
