New Yorkse anti’s gaan fysiek geweld gebruiken
Door de aanhoudende pogingen van Burgemeester Bloomberg van New York om,
koste wat het kost, rokers aan te pakken, wordt de sfeer in de Big Apple sterk verziekt. Ook de weerstand van horeca en rokers in de stad is enorm. De doorsnee New Yorker weigert zich te laten betuttelen.
Dit artikel verhaalt over een onverhoedse aanval op een roker in de New Yorkse straten. De schrijfster vraagt zich af waar dit naar toe gaat:
How many other smokers has she assaulted? Clearly, no one had ever taken
her to task for her anti-social outbursts. Still, this seemingly normal New Yorker thought she had the right to hit and kick a smoker on the street.
Obviously, my squirrely friend wasn’t normal at all. Only extremist zealots – like terrorists – use physical violence as a solution.
But when cities across the country, and now our own Mayor Bloomberg, are
raving about smokers as public enemy No. 1, it gives ammunition – permission – to fanatics like my anger-management case. A smokers’ right to not be physically assaulted is coming into question.
