‘Meeroken 40 keer gevaarlijker dan luchtverontreiniging’

We hebben even overwogen om dit verhaal in de categorie Wetenschap te zetten, maar bij nadere bestudering was dit Ierse onderzoek de omschrijving ‘wetenschap’ niet waard.


Op het moment dat de anti-rokenlobby grote invloed ontwikkelt in een land zie je vaak de vreemdste onderzoeken verschijnen. Veel wetenschappers kunnen geen weerstand bieden aan de fondsen die beschikbaar komen op het moment dat een regering haar oren laat hangen naar deze lobby. Per slot van rekening wil ook de regering graag dat er bewijs op tafel komt dat hun vaak wankele wetgeving tóch wel deugt.


En wat doe je dan als wetenschapper? Je zondert je af in een kamertje, neemt een paar theorieboeken ter hand en bouwt op basis daarvan een paar formuletjes.


Wat rekenen, en…. jawel, wéér een stukje junk-science geboren…. Maar in ieder geval weer wat verdiend….


Forces expert James Austin verdiepte zich in het onderzoekje en viel bijna van zijn stoel af van het lachen:

The hypothesis was: Is vehicle pollution far more dangerous than tobacco smoke? So what did they do?



  1. They measured ETS in pubs. (They didn’t actually measure anything, they estimated on paper how much ETS was probably in the air). By the way, something like 90% of ETS is water and air, 4% carbon monoxide and 6% is those 4,000 chemicals we always hear about. I have no idea if this is considered (the water and air) when weighing this pollution.
  2. They used already published information on how much ETS there was next to a specific road.

This is either a very badly written story or these University College Dublin academics are the two dumbest people in Ireland.


They don’t mention how much vehicle pollution was in the air, unless the reporter confuses ETS with vehicle pollution. And they don’t mention if the amount of ETS supposedly found in pubs is actually toxic at those levels.
