Hoe verdachtmakingen kunnen eindigen

Meer dan een maand geleden betichtte een journalist van de Halifax Herald de fanatieke rokers van het ontkennen van de schadelijkheid van meeroken. Gian Turci, CEO van Forces en president van Forces Italië, schreef de man een e-mail en vroeg hem een publieke discussie aan te gaan over het onderwerp. De man reageerde in een e-mail als volgt:

Thank you for your letter. I have no intention of becoming involved in a debate on your tobacco industry-supported Web site. I will, however, be addressing the topic again in my next column.

Zoiets moet je niet tegen Gian zeggen en er kwam een briefwisseling op gang.

Thank you for you reply. As I have already specified in my previous letter, we are not supported in any way, shape or form by the tobacco industry, but we are in the business of debunking disinformers such as yourself. Diverting the issue of antitobacco being financed by the pharmaceutical industry with slander will neither help, nor change the issue.

If you think that you can get away with silencing those who object to your cheap false campaign through slander, think again. The times for pharmaceutically-funded lies begin to end, as the credibility/integrity of health crusaders is seriously in question. I also demand that you retract your statement — or procure evidence to the public, as we procure the documentation when we state that antitobacco organisations are paid off by Big Pharma. You are endangering the reputation of your newspaper by promoting this kind of information. I stand by for evidence of your statement.

  • I've alllllllways said that asking smokers "do you want to quit?" and reporting the results of that question, as is, is horribly misleading. It's a TWO part question. After asking if one wants to quit it must be followed up with "Why?" Ask why and the majority of the answers will be "because I'm supposed to" (victims of guilt and propaganda), not "because I want to."
