‘Helft pubs heeft personeel ontslagen’

47% van de natte sector rapporteert een omzetverlies van meer dan 20% sinds de invoering van het rookverbod in Engeland. Er kwamen 14% minder rokers in de horeca en ze bleven beduidend minder lang. Dit verminderde bezoek werd nauwelijks gecompenseerd door meer bezoek van niet-rokers en families.

47% van de horeca geeft aan personeel te hebben moeten ontslaan, 74% geeft van de eigenaren geeft aan erg te lijden onder het rookverbod.

Dit zijn een paar resultaten die naar boven komen in een nieuw rapport dat de gevolgen van een jaar rookverbod evalueerde. 

The findings of a survey published today showed the devastating impact of the Government’s war on tobacco on the traditional British pub. 74% of licensees surveyed report that the smoking ban has been bad for business – with 47% laying off staff as a direct result – and almost half believe that the proposed ban on vending machines will further harm their already fragile businesses. ….In 2006, before the smoking ban, 54% of pub trade was estimated to come from smokers – today this is just 38%, with almost no increase in trade from non-smokers to compensate for the losses. One year on just 14% of licensees believe that the ban has been good for the pub and bar trade in their area and 74% think that it has been bad…….42% of our members believe that a ban on vending will be bad for trade, at a time when many are struggling to preserve their viability as small businesses and vital community assets. Almost no-one thinks that it will help.

  • I've alllllllways said that asking smokers "do you want to quit?" and reporting the results of that question, as is, is horribly misleading. It's a TWO part question. After asking if one wants to quit it must be followed up with "Why?" Ask why and the majority of the answers will be "because I'm supposed to" (victims of guilt and propaganda), not "because I want to."
