Dramatische stijging roken onder tieners

Roken onder Engelse schoolkinderen heeft recordhoogtes bereikt: 60% van de 14- en 15-jarigen geeft aan wel eens een sigaret te hebben gerookt. Dat is de conclusie van een nieuw Engels onderzoek.

The report by the Schools Health Education Unit found that 40% of 12 to 13-year-olds and 60% of 14 to 15-year-olds admitted trying cigarettes in 2001. This compares to 30% of 12 to 13-year-olds and 57% of 14 to 15-year-olds in 1990.

Hm.. Interessant… Tabaksreclame is de afgelopen jaren dramatisch afgenomen. De hoeveelheid campagnes tegen roken, met voornamelijk jongeren als doelgroep, is de laatste jaren nog nooit zo hoog geweest… Wat kan er aan de hand zijn?

Three-quarters of young smokers wanted to kick the habit. This proportion has remained static over the years despite government campaigns to discourage smoking.

Een voor de hand liggende conclusie lijkt te zijn dat JUIST de overheidscampagnes een betere reclame voor tabak blijken te zijn dan de activiteiten van de tabaksindustrie.
