Wel eens in Londen geweest? Of wel eens opnamen gezien van al die mensen die daar door de straten wandelen om inkopen te doen of gewoon naar het werk te gaan?
Alleen al door daar rond te lopen ademen ze per dag het equivalent in van 15 sigaretten. Dat beweren tenminste wetenschappers van de King’s College in Londen.
Researchers from King’s College, University Of London, found a normal day’s
exposure can be the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes. Pollution hotspots
include Marylebone Road, where daily vehicle emissions are so concentrated that
pedestrians and those with offices or homes on the roadside are exposed to the
NOx equivalent of more than 30 cigarettes. Other affected areas include King’s
Road (29 cigarettes a day), and Hammersmith Broadway (27.3 cigarettes).
Andrew Ford, of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association which analysed the
King’s College data, said: “This pollutant is strongly linked to breathing
problems and 40,000 premature UK deaths a year are attributed to poor
air.”
In het moderne westen is lucht dus gewoon vuil. En lucht houdt niet stil
doordat een deur de weg verspert. Vuile lucht is vrij om te gaan en te staan
waar ze wil. We kunnen er maar beter weerstand tegen ontwikkelen want alle vuil
uit de lucht houden lukt toch niet….
