Wales rookvrij in april 2007 / Schotland treurt

The Welsh Assembly is planning to bring in its blanket smoking ban from April 2 next year.

First minister Rhodri Morgan will announce the ban, which will include all pubs and private members’ clubs, to the assembly in Cardiff this afternoon.

Assembly members are expected to be given a free vote on the date, but with most members in support of the ban, the date is expected to become set in stone.

The ban in England is not expected to brought in until later next summer, although the Department of Health has yet to confirm the start-date.

Wales planning to go early on smoking ban

The Scottish Licensed Trade Association survey, conducted among 365 of the 5,000 establishments across Scotland, found that the ban has hit regulars particularly hard, with 46 per cent of licensees reporting a drop in visits by regulars and only five per cent reporting an increase.

To make matters worse, any anticipated new business from non-smokers has failed to materialise.

If the survey is to be believed, 20 per cent of licensees have reported more new customers or more frequent business but 17 per cent have reported fewer.

Interestingly, even food sales dropped, by some three per cent.

  • I've alllllllways said that asking smokers "do you want to quit?" and reporting the results of that question, as is, is horribly misleading. It's a TWO part question. After asking if one wants to quit it must be followed up with "Why?" Ask why and the majority of the answers will be "because I'm supposed to" (victims of guilt and propaganda), not "because I want to."
