Lung donor shortage prompts plea to smokers
An Australian lung specialist is calling on smokers to volunteer as lung donors.
Physician Dr Judy Morton has told a medical conference in Sydney that smokers’ lungs are often quite acceptable for lung transplants.
Dr Morton has told the annual scientific meeting of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand that many smokers believe their lungs are not suitable for donation.
However, she says in many cases that is not true.
While admitting smokers’ lungs are not optimum, Dr Morton says the drastic shortage of lung donors means doctors need to broaden the donor pool.
Young smokers, that is people who have smoked less than the equivalent of a pack a day for 20 years, still have lungs that are acceptable for donation on the balance of risk.
Dr Morton says there are many lung recipients who have received a smoker’s lung, with no clinical difference in the outcome.
Currently up to a quarter of people die while waiting for a donor lung to become available.
