Philip Morris verlaat New York
Al eerder, in 1995, dreigde Philip Morris haar kantoor in New York te sluiten en naar Virginia te verhuizen. Reden: de door de gemeente New York ingevoerde rookverboden. Maar doordat de gemeente voor Philip Morris een uitzondering op het rookverbod op de werkplek maakte, bleef het bedrijf in de stad.
Het laatste, veel strengere, rookverbod laat echter ook voor PM geen uitzondering meer toe en daarom wordt het dreigement van 1995 nu wel uitgevoerd.
Philip Morris CEO Michael Szymanczyk is making the move and wants to keep his team intact. So in the company’s high-rise headquarters, which overlooks Grand Central Station, employees can visit the ”Richmond Room,” a conference room decorated with posters of the Virginia capital’s nicest neighborhoods and landmarks, and stocked with 50 cartons of maps, brochures, and visitor guides. Philip Morris employees also each received a CD extolling short commutes, spacious homes, and other amenities of Richmond living.
One such amenity: If they move, Philip Morris employees will once again be able to smoke their free cigarettes at the office. New York City’s latest crackdown on tobacco made smoking in public places illegal, even in Philip Morris’s suites.
Naar buiten wordt echter formeel de door de verhuizing te bereiken besparingen benadrukt:
”But everyone understands the business rationale, the significant cost savings,” he said. Philip Morris expects to save $60 million annually with reduced travel and operating costs.
Het blijft echter typisch dat de verhuizing naar het veel tabaksvriendelijker Virginia wordt aangekondigd zo kort na de invoering van het New Yorkse rookverbod.
