The ballot of 30 venues and 1,185 customers across the country, which was run by Atmosphere Improves Results (AIR), also found that 28 per cent of customers considered smoke a problem, 38 per cent wanted a ban in eating areas while 30 per cent said they would spend more time in the pub if changes were made to smoking policies.
Of staff balloted, 37 per cent considered smoke a problem while nine per cent wanted a total ban. Half of staff wanted smoking banned in eating areas and 40 per cent wanted no smoking at the bar.
Only 19 per cent of customers supported no smoking at the bar. Of those polled 47 per cent of customers and 42 per cent of staff were smokers.
