Spanjaarden lachen om waarschuwingen
“Roken kan impotentie veroorzaken” staat er sinds kort ook op de Spaanse pakjes sigaretten. EU-voorschrift, natuurlijk. Maar de Spanjaarden maken er zich niet druk om volgens dit New York Times artikel. Ze realiseren zich best, ze hebben daar ervaring mee, dat zo’n spreuk onzin is. En als deze waarschuwing voor hun al aantoonbaar onwaar is, dan zal het met de andere waarschuwingen wel nét zo gesteld zijn…
Wat echter niet op de pakjes staat is dat het percentage Spanjaarden dat rookt véél hoger is dan dat in de VS, maar dat de gemiddelde maximale leeftijd in Spanje die in de VS beduidend overtreft: 79.23 in Spanje versus 77.14 in de VS.

Rather than kick the habit, smokers in this country are simply buying leather or metal cases to hide the unpleasant texts.
One merchant, Miguel García, 44, became so fed up with the warnings that he started handing out alternative labels that customers could place over the warnings. “Driving may endanger your health,” reads one. “Living is fatal,” quips another.
The smokers themselves are laughing with scorn as they puff.
“How can the state protect me, when I’ve been smoking for 20 years and I knew it was unhealthy from Day 1?” said María José Cañete, 47.
Nacho Mateo, 23, said: “It’s really hypocritical. Why not put warning signs on cars or pictures of diseased livers on bottles of alcohol?”
Mr. Mateo’s reaction is typical in pro-cigarette Spain, where the national government is busy drafting antismoking laws to keep up with European Union directives, while folks blow smoke in its face.
