Federale regering wil tabaksindustrie plunderen
De Amerikaanse federale overheid wil nog eens 289 miljard dollar incasseren van de tabaksindustrie vanwege “frauduleuze en gevaarlijke marketingtechnieken”. Al eerder, in 1998, hadden een groot aantal Amerikaanse staten de tabaksindustrie in het zogenaamde Master Settlement Agreement al 246 miljard dollar afgetroggeld, uit te betalen over 25 jaar.
De beschuldigingen liegen er niet om:
Citing new evidence, the Justice Department asserts in more than 1,400 pages of court documents that the major cigarette companies are running what amounts to a criminal enterprise by manipulating nicotine levels, lying to customers about the dangers of tobacco and directing multibillion-dollar advertising campaigns at children.
De tabaksindustrie, op zijn beurt, betwijfelt of deze claim wel haalbaar is en, wanneer dat wél zo zou zijn, of de bedrijfstak dit wel zou overleven:
A financial analyst who covers the tobacco industry and spoke on condition of anonymity said that if the Justice Department were to win anything approaching the $289 billion figure, cigarette makers would, at the very least, have to consider raising their prices by about 50 cents a pack. Even so, the analyst said, “survival would be problematic.”
Grootspraak van de Amerikaanse overheid? Of een nieuwe poging de eigen budgetten aan te vullen via een eenzijdige belasting van de toch al goed uitgeknepen rokende bevolkingsgroep? Of is dit de manier waarop de Amerikaanse overheid de financiering van de oorlog in Irak wil rondkrijgen?
