Ventilation standards
A key argument of anti-smoking activists has ``gone up in smoke'' since the
latest interpretation from the world's leading ventilation standards
organization.
During the recent WCB hearings into smoking in hospitality establishments,
several anti-smoking activists made reference to ventilation standards issued
by the respected American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air
Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Since then, new interpretations were released by ASHRAE confirming that
ventilation works for smoking areas. According to ASHRAE, ventilation rates
for bars, cocktail lounges and casinos where smoking is allowed are 30 cfm
(cubic feet per minute per person). Although the WCB relies upon ASHRAE for
guidance, ASHRAE requires a rate only half of that demanded by the WCB under
its current regulation to minimize workers exposure to environmental tobacco
smoke (ETS). . .
``ASHRAE members realized that their actions were being distorted and have
issued two formal interpretations to set the record straight,'' said Vance
Campbell, President of the Cabaret Owners Association of BC.
``These interpretations now provide guidance to designers and operators
of hospitality establishments where smoking is allowed,'' he added. . .
The Coalition of Hospitality Organizations is an umbrella group of affected
businesses, labour, and injured workers that support ventilation solutions to
protect workers health and save jobs.
