1989 DOT study
This study, from the US Department of Transport was kept secret for a long
time. A copy of the report, that is the basis for all smoking bans on American
airlines, was found in a library and digitized.
The bulky report describes the way the study was set up and why it was set
up that way. Of course it also contains the study's results and conclusions.
Some typical results:
- Smoking on board causes four lung cancer deaths per 20 years
- Cabin crew has an over 2500 increased risk to get lung cancer because of
the cosmic radiation at the higher altitudes
- The extra costs for ventilation aboard is one of the main reasons for
the smoking bans
- Because of the cosmic radiation they had to fly lower and therefore
increase fuel use. Banning smoking and lowering ventilation had to
compensate.
